Pit and Fissure Sealants

It is a preventive measure which is applied to the occlusal surfaces of the first permanent molars,wherever,and if it is appropriate. The occlusal surfaces of these particular teeth, which usually erupt at the age of 6, have an intense morphology with pits and fissures (groves), which occasionally are deep and hard to clean. Considering, at the same time, that young patients do not possess adequate skill at tooth brushing at that age, we perceive the increased probability of those teeth to develop caries.

The material of thesealants(composite resin-based materials with high viscosity) resembles varnish that flows on the surface of the tooth, covering surface irregularitiesand fissures, thus aiding in preventing the development of caries on the occlusal surface.
