Space maintainers

The premature loss of primary teeth (at an earlier age than that when physiological exfoliation is expected) may result in space issues for their permanent successors. The adjacent teeth drifting into the space of extraction, something which causes space loss, or the space closure, as well as the general reduction of the arch length (bone) are the most common. These drifts may lead to orthodontic problems or even tooth impaction (blockage). In order to avoid something like that, after the loss of a primary tooth, the Pediatric Dentist places a passive space maintaining appliance. They are orthodontic appliances, either unilateral or bilateral, fixed or removable orthodontic appliances, depending on the case, and are built by dental laboratories
